Waves Make 11-Point Fourth Quarter Comeback in Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With 10 seconds on the clock, Barbara Sitanggan made a contested layup to put the Pepperdine women's basketball team ahead of Santa Clara, giving the Waves a 76-74 victory on Saturday. Yasmine Robinson-Bacote had 31 points, and Deezha Battle had a career-high 21.

The Waves (15-8, 9-4 WCC) trailed the Broncos (10-13, 3-9 WCC) for 34 minutes before the Waves scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to escape with their fourth-straight West Coast Conference victory.

BIG WAVES
  • Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) had 31 points, her 11th game with at least 20 points, and 23rd game with at least 10. She also had 12 rebounds, her 6th double-double of the year.
  • Deezha Battle (Albuquerque, N.M./Cochise College) had a career-high 21 points on 8-15 shooting and 5-8 from three.
GAME RECAP
The first quarter was a low scoring one, by both teams' standards. After a barrage of threes from Santa Clara, the quarter ended 16-8 in favor of the Broncos. Robinson-Bacote led the Waves with 5 points in the quarter, and Rose Pflug had the other three with a shot from beyond the arc. The second quarter had a lot more action, as the teams found their rhythm. The Waves scored the first five points of the quarter, thanks to Monique Andriuolo, who had two layups and a free throw. Robinson-Bacote continued her scoring ways, putting up 13 points in the quarter, for a total of 18 in the half, leading all scorers. At the end of the first half, Santa Clara led 33-29.

After the break, the Broncos continued to build upon their lead, with the Waves slowly trying to climb back. The Broncos took an eight-point lead before a couple of three-point shots from Battle put the Waves within five points. However, Santa Clara took a 59-48 lead going into the final ten minutes of play.

In the final quarter, the Waves came alive. Pepperdine started the quarter on a 9-2 run, to get the game to within three points with five minutes left. After a couple of shots from Battle, The Waves had the ball with less than a minute left and trailing three. Battle then drained a three to tie the game at 72 before the Broncos took a 74-72 lead. Battle again came up clutch with a jumper to tie the game at 74 with 20 seconds left. After a five-second violation by the Broncos, the Waves had possession. The ball was inbounded to Sitanggan who drove and made the layup with just six seconds to play, giving the Waves the 76-74 lead. A deflection from Pflug forced an inbound from Santa Clara who couldn't make the shot, sealing the victory for the Waves.

UP NEXT
The Waves will have a short turnaround, as they take on Cal State Los Angeles on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Firestone Fieldhouse. The game is an addition to the schedule after the Woosley Fire in November forced a cancellation. Tip-off for the game against Cal State LA will be at 7 p.m.
