Waves Win Close Battle on Senior Day

MALIBU, Calif.— The Pepperdine women's basketball team had a tough go around in their final home game of the regular season, defeating Saint Mary's 77-72 in Firestone Fieldhouse for their 8th-straight victory. Yasmine Robinson-Bacote led the Waves with 20 points in her final regular season game in Malibu.
The Waves (19-8, 12-4 WCC) also celebrated two other seniors, Megan House and Keyari Sleezer, in their final home regular season game against the Gaels (18-10, 11-6 WCC).
 
BIG WAVES
  • Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) had a team-leading 20 points. She also had seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Rose Pflug (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) tied a career high with 17 points, shooting 4-8 from three.
  • Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) had 15 points and four rebounds.
  • Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) had 12 points and 10 assists for her first double-double of the season.
KEY STATS
  • The Waves were outshot from the field overall, shooting 35.8% while the Gaels shot 49.2%.
  • Pepperdine dominated from deep, shooting 38.1% from three-point, while the Gaels shot only 7%.
GAME RECAP
The Waves got off to a good start in the fourth quarter, going on a 6-0 run to start the game. However, the Gaels answered back with a 6-0 run of their own to even the game at eight a piece. Another run for the Waves saw them with a 17-21 lead after one quarter of play. Robinson-Bacote had seven points in the first ten minutes.

In the second quarter, the Waves had their best scoring output, as they built their lead to as many as 10 points in the quarter. Pflug had two of her four three-pointers in the second quarter. Robinson-Bacote had another seven points in the second, helping the Waves to a 46-38 halftime lead.

The Gaels and Waves traded buckets at the start of the second half, and a 5-0 run for the Gaels got them to within four points. However, the Waves went on a 6-0 run to close the quarter, taking a 62-53 lead into the final ten minutes of play.

Pepperdine held tight in the final ten minutes of play, though at one point went on a shooting drought, letting the Gaels get to within three points. Timely shots nad rebounding, as well as confidence at the free throw line were able to seal the game at 77-72.

UP NEXT
The Waves have their final two regular-season games next week, traveling first to No. 15 Gonzaga on Thursday, Feb. 28 before traveling to Portland for the final game of the regular season on Saturday, March 2. The game against Gonzaga is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
