Waves Win Big at Home Against Pacific

MALIBU, Calif.— A total team effort from the Pepperdine women's basketball team led to a 20-point victory over Pacific in a West Coast Conference matchup on Thursday as the Waves won 96-76. The Waves had two players with at least 20 points: Yasmine Robinson-Bacote had 29 and Barbara Sitanggan had 24.

The Waves (18-8, 11-4 WCC) led the Tigers (16-10, 9-7 WCC) by as many as 36 points in the third quarter to notch their seventh win in a row. The winning streak is the longest since the 2001-02 season when the Waves won 12 games in a row. Pepperdine's 11 conference wins are also the most since that same year.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) led all scorers with 29 points, and also had 11 rebounds to secure her 10th double-double of the year. She shot 12-17 from the field and 4-5 from the free throw line.
  • Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) had 24 points, a new career-high, and seven rebounds. She also shot 11-12 from the free throw line.
  • Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) had 13 points on 5-13 from the field, including 3-6 from beyond the arc.
KEY STATS
  • The Waves shot a blistering 51.5% from the field on 34-66 shooting. In contrast, the Tigers shot just 36.8 % from the field.
  • Pepperdine controlled the glass as well, bringing down 50 rebounds compared to 33 from Pacific.
 
GAME RECAP
The Waves started hot and stayed hot, as after scoring first 17 seconds into the game, they never lost their lead. Robinson-Bacote had 11 points in the first quarter, and Sitanggan had five to lead all scorers. In the quarter, the Waves had a small 5-0 scoring run to give them the 22-14 edge after the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, the Waves really opened up the scoring. They opened the quarter on a 10-0 run to take an 18-point lead halfway through the quarter. They had their largest lead of the quarter at the very end, when the Waves led the Tigers 52-26 going into the halftime break. At the half, Robinson-Bacote had 19 points, and Sitanggan had 15 as the Waves outscored the Tigers 30-12 in the second quarter.

To start the second half, the Waves picked up right where they left off, taking a 24 point lead before going on a 12-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 35 points. In the third, Robinson-Bacote scored eight points to bring her total for the game to 27 as the Waves led 82-50 after three periods of play. In the final 10 minutes of play, the Tigers mounted a small comeback, but could not overcome the deficit, falling by 20 points.

Now in a tie for third place, the Waves have a crucial WCC matchup with Saint Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Firestone Fieldhouse. It is also the final home game of the year, and Pepperdine will be honoring the team's three seniors, with tip-off set at 2 p.m.
