LA QUINTA, Calif. – Led by top-10 finishes by Joshua McCarthy and Joe Highsmith, the Pepperdine men's golf team turned in a solid third-place showing at The Prestige, its first tournament of the spring season, on Wednesday.
Â
The Waves finished with a three-day total of a 5-over 857 (289-281-287) at the par-71 Greg Norman Course at PGA West. The 14th-ranked Waves finished only behind #16 LSU (838) and #1 Oklahoma State (844) while beating six top-50 teams, including Pac-12 schools UCLA, Oregon and Stanford.
Â
In six tournaments in the 2018-19 school year, the Waves have finished first twice, third three times and no worse than fifth.
Â
"The guys did well," Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. "After we finished the first round, the goal was to get into the final pairing, which we did. We didn't get off to a great start today, and we knew we needed one. The wind direction was completely opposite so some of the holes played a lot tougher than the first two days. We didn't play badly, it just wasn't the start we were looking for. For the first tournament of the spring, I think this is something we can learn from and continue to get better."
