LA QUINTA, Calif. – Behind 1-under 70s by Roy Cootes, Joe Highsmith and Joshua McCarthy, the Pepperdine men's golf team shot the second-best round of the day and moved up to third place following Tuesday's second round at The Prestige.

The Waves shot a 3-under 281 at the par-71 Greg Norman Course at PGA West, and only LSU at 4-under was better today. LSU (559) moved into the lead, ahead of top-ranked Oklahoma State (564) and the Waves (289-281=570). Pepperdine jumped UCLA (571) and maintained its lead over Oregon (574).

The Waves' four scoring players were at a combined 6-over through eight holes, but went 9-under over the final 10 holes.

PLAYER SCORES

Junior Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) is in eighth place with 1-under 141 (71-70). All five of his birdies today came on the back nine, with four in a five-hole stretch.
Freshman Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for ninth place with an even-par 142 (72-70). He was 2-over at the turn but posted three of his four birdies on the back nine.
Junior Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) is tied for 17th place at 144 (73-71). He had two birdies today.
Freshman Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for 26th at 146 (73-73). He had three birdies during the second round.
Senior Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) is also tied for 26th, moving up more than 20 spots in the standings, at 146 (76-70). He had three birdies today.

UP NEXT

The third and final round is Wednesday. The Waves are paired with LSU and Oklahoma State and the three teams will start on the first hole at 9:20 a.m. Golfweek is providing live streaming of the event.
