Malibu, Calif. – For the second time since the formation of the conference, Pepperdine men's water polo head coach Terry Schroeder has been named Golden Coast Conference Coach of the Year. He is the only coach in the conference to win the award more than once.
Schroeder led the Waves to a 25-8 overall record, the most in a season for the Waves since 2008. He also led the team to its second-ever GCC title and first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997, reaching the national semifinal.
In addition to winning the GCC Tournament title in their home pool with wins over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (10-9, OT) and No. 8 Long Beach State (14-12), the Waves added two hallmark wins during the season. On Oct. 12, Pepperdine defeated No. 6 California 13-12 for the first time since 2008. Then one week later, the Waves defeated No. 4 USC 13-12 for the first time since 2005.
After leading the United States Olympic water polo team from 2005-2012, Schroeder returned to Pepperdine in 2013 for his second tour of duty as the men's water polo head coach. In his first stint with Pepperdine (1986-2005) he amassed 340 wins and a national championship in 1997. The head coach for USA Water Polo at two Olympics, Schroeder has been inducted into the Capital One Academic All-America Hall of Fame (2013), International Swimming Hall of Fame (2005), U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame (1998) and the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame (1985). Finishing his 27th season, he has a career record of 445-308 (.591) and is the winningest coach in program history.
