MALIBU, Calif. – The #5 Pepperdine men's water polo team finished of the weekend with two victories in the first ever Pepperdine Invite. The Waves defeated Cal Lutheran 15-8 and Concordia Irvine 19-8.
Marko Asic and
Balazs Kosa had eight and seven goals on the day, respectively. Asic's eight goals get him to within two goals of his father Pero's, total career goals at Pepperdine (229).
PEPPERDINE 15, CAL LUTHERAN 8
In the first game of the day, it was all Waves.
Balazs Kosa (Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc Általános Iskola És Gimnázium) and Asic (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) led off with two straight goals before the Kingsmen scored their first. Kosa completed his hat trick in the first quarter with two more goals. Cal Lutheran scored twice to end the quarter, and the Waves led 4-3 after the first eight minutes of play.
Sean Thomas (Covina, Calif./Loyola HS) started the second quarter with a goal, and after a CLU goal, Asic got his second of the game.
Austin Smit (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and Asic finished off the half with two straight goals to give the Waves an 8-5 lead after two quarters.
The Waves kept the Kingsmen to just a single goal in the third quarter. Asic scored twice more in the quarter to bring his total to five goals on the game.
Sean Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS),
Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) and Smit each scored in the quarter to boost the Waves' lead to 13-7 with eight minutes remaining in the game. Jarvis and
Zach Arthur (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) scored in the fourth quarter to secure the Waves' 15-8 victory.

In the Waves' second game of the day, it was all offense for the Waves. Kosa got the Waves' first two goals to put the Waves up 2-1 early. Then,
Kaden Kaneko (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) and Dilworth scored at the end of the quarter to give the Waves a 4-1 lead after eight minutes of play. In the second quarter, the Waves held the Eagles to just two goals. Dilworth led off the quarter with a goal before Concordia scored. Then, the Waves got goals from Thomas, Asic,
Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erszebet Boarding School) and Kosa to give them a 9-3 lead at the half.
In the third, the Waves got six straight goals to start the quarter. Toth got his second before Asic completed his hat trick. Then, Kosa got his third of the game and
Jacob Watson (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS),
Max Sprute (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame HS) and Jarvis got goals for the Waves to take a 15-4 lead. Each team scored four times in the final period. The Waves got two goals from
Xavier Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), as well as goals from Dilworth and Asic to cement the victory.
