Malibu, Calif. – The fifth-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team started off its weekend well with an 11-8 victory over #12 San Jose State on Saturday. Chris Dilworth led the Waves with three goals.
The Waves (18-7, 2-1 GCC) never trailed the Spartans (7-14, 1-2 GCC) in the game.
GAME RECAP
Pepperdine got off to a hot start, scoring the first three goals of the game. Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) opened the scoring, and he was followed by Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) and Marko Asic (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) to take a 3-2 lead after one quarter of play. Balazs Kosa (Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc Altalanos Iskola es Gimnazium) scored his only goal of the game on a five-meter penalty in the second quarter. Dilworth then got his second of the game with three minutes to play in the first half. At the half, the Waves led 6-4.
Dilworth completed his hat trick to start the second half and put the Waves up 7-4. After two goals from the Spartans, Jarvis and Asic both got their second goals, and Sean Thomas (Covina, Calif./Loyola HS) got his first of the game just before the quarter ended, giving the Waves a 9-6 lead with eight minutes to play. Thomas got his second goal halfway through the fourth period to give the Waves their 10th goal of the game. San Jose State tried to mount a comeback, but fell short as George Mooney (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) scored with 12 seconds left to secure the 11-8 victory.
