CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 7 Pepperdine men's water polo team picked up two more wins on Saturday at the Gary Troyer Tournament. The Waves defeated No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer 13-7 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 19-10.
The Waves (13-5) were led by
Balazs Kosa, who scored 10 goals on the day.
PEPPERDINE 13, POMONA-PITZER 7
The Waves started the game hot, scoring the first four goals of the game, and the only four goals of the first quarter.
Sean Thomas (Covina, Calif./Loyola HS) started the scoring, and was followed by two straight goals from Kosa (Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc Általános Iskola És Gimnázium).
Kaden Kaneko (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) scored the final goal of the quarter to go ahead 4-0 after one. In the second quarter, the Sagehens scored first, but were quickly answered by
Marko Asic's first goal of the game. The two teams traded goals the rest of the quarter, with Kosa scoring his second and third to give the Waves a 7-3 lead going into the half.
Kosa scored twice to lead off the second half, followed by two straight from Asic and a goal from Kaneko to give the Waves a 12-4 lead after three. The Waves got a single goal from
Sean Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS) to secure the 13-7 win.

In the day's second game, the Stags scored first, but the Waves quickly answered thanks to
Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS). After another Stags goal, Ferrari got his first of the game. The Waves then got goals from Kosa and Thomas to close the period with a 4-2 lead. In the second,
George Mooney (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) scored his first goal before
Chris Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) got his first. Asic then scored three in a row and Kosa got his second of the game to give the Waves a 10-3 halftime lead.
The second half was more of the same, as Kosa opened the third quarter with a goal. The Waves got two more from Asic and a second from Kosa before Kaneko got his first of the game.
Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erszebet Boarding School) scored to close the third quarter, giving the Waves a 16-7 lead with eight minutes to play.
Xavier Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and
Zach Arthur (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) joined Kosa in scoring goals in the final period to secure the 19-10 win for the Waves.
