PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first match, the Waves came out to play and after
Tarah Wylie posted three big kills and
Hana Lishman tabbed the first of the Waves' 13 aces and first of her four on the day, Pepperdine had an 11-7 lead. A strong service output from
Rachel Ahrens later in the set, followed by big smashes from
Shannon Scully and a Malibu Roofing Company rejections from Wylie and
Blossom Sato, and the Waves were looking at a 22-14 lead down the home stretch. A final block from Wylie and Ahrens sealed the deal with a 25-15 set win and an early advantage.
In the second set, Pepperdine once again started strong with big serves from Scully and
Hannah Frohling. Aces from Frohling and a block connection from Ahrens and
Alli O'Harra and the Waves led 15-11. With
Shannon Scully at the service line, the Waves went on a 5-0 run late in the action, including a pair of aces and a kill from
Hannah Frohling. Big smashes from Wylie in the middle and another ace from Lishman put the set away with a 25-16 result
In the third and final set, Pepperdine came out ready to close, but the opposition was intent on keeping it close for a comeback attempts. After tied scores en route to a 13-13 tie, the Waves buckled down, however, and another back-to-back ace effort from Lishman helped the cause for a 20-14 advantage. Four Scully kills late in the set finished the match for the Waves with a 25-18 final set score and a clean sweep to open the day.
In the second match, the Waves continued with the momentum from the first match and pounded out to a 7-1 lead to open the match, fueled by big service effort from
Lily Dyer and a strong attack effort from
Heidi Dyer. Strong service was a big key throughout the match as Sato found her groove late in the set with an ace that put the Waves ahead 15-5. Pepperdine would not let up, either, and kills from
Rosie Ballo and a block effort from Wylie and Scully gave the team a 25-10 first set win to pull ahead early.
In the second set, the opposition stayed close behind in the opening moments, but after a 4-4 tie, the Waves pushed ahead to a 12-7 advantage sponsored by big performances from Lishman and Sato at the service line. Late in the set, a
Heidi Dyer and Wylie block connection and a final kill from
Jaiden Farr earned a 25-15 set win for Pepperdine a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
The third set was the Waves from start to finish and three-consecutive service aces from Wylie gave Pepperdine a 12-4 lead in the match. More aces down the line and finding the weak spots in the defense across the net helped the Waves continue to roll towards a 21-14 advantage. In the home stretch,
Heidi Dyer and Ballo went up for a rejection together and Wylie delivered the final kill for a 25-17 set win and the second three-set sweep on the day.
