Women's Soccer Beaten at Saint Mary's, 1-0

MORAGA, California – The Pepperdine women's soccer team surrendered its first goal in 476 minutes and couldn't find an answer despite dominating the offensive end in a 1-0 West Coast Conference loss at Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon.

The Waves (6-6, 1-1) saw their streak of five consecutive shutout victories come to an end at the hands of the Gaels (6-4-2, 1-0-1) though Pepperdine had a 17-5 shot advantage.

Both teams had some chances in the first half, but the Gaels got on the board in the 21st minute after being awarded a penalty kick. Other than one moment where senior defender Danielle Thomas (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) had to clear a ball off the line, the second half was all Pepperdine. The Gaels weren't credited with a second-half shot while the Waves attempted 10.

GOALS

Saint Mary's 21': A Saint Mary's attacker was judged to have been knocked down by a Pepperdine defender in the far corner of the box, near the end line, and the Gaels were awarded a penalty kick. Jasmine Edwards scored on the PK for the game's only goal.

QUOTABLE

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "We really started brightly the first 10 minutes and might have had a goal or two. Their first real attack, they got in, and I don't know, unfortunately a PK was called, they buried it, and it changed the whole game. They got into a very defensive posture, very organized, and we had to chase the game. We created more than enough opportunities to get an equalizer. We just lacked some composure. All of our strikers had at least one good opportunity. It was just one of those days, and it was tough. But I'm proud of the soccer we're playing right now. In our sport, if you play good soccer over time, that translates to wins. The soccer today was just as good as we've been playing over the last couple of weeks. We dominated, but just couldn't find the final touch. As a result we're coming home 1-1 but we'll learn from it, we'll stay humble and hungry and get better this week."

NOTABLE

  • Though Pepperdine leads the all-time series 12-8-4, the Gaels have caused issues for the Waves in recent years, as this was the fourth shutout in the last five seasons (the Waves are 1-2-2 vs. SMC in that time).
  • The Waves were shut out for the fifth time this season.
