Women's Soccer Ties 1-1 With San Francisco

MALIBU, CaliforniaBrie Welch scored early for the Pepperdine women's soccer team, but a late San Francisco equalizer and a host of missed chances led to a 1-1 tie between the West Coast Conference schools on Friday afternoon.

The Waves (6-6-1, 1-1-1) outshot the Dons (7-5-1, 0-1-1) by a total of 17-9. Pepperdine hit the post three times and forced USF goalkeeper Olivia Camera into making a few remarkable saves.

The Dons had opportunities as well, but senior goalkeeper Brielle Preece (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS) made a couple of big second-half stops among her four saves.

After the Dons scored in the 88th minute, the Waves regrouped and played excellent soccer in the OT period, outshooting USF 7-0 with four of those shots on goal.

GOALS

Pepperdine 23': Junior forward Hailey Stenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) sent the ball ahead of Welch (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande HS) on the right side, and the sophomore forward dribbled into the box and scored her second goal of the season from close range.

San Francisco 88': With just over two minutes to play in regulation, USF sent a free kick into the box. The Waves attempted to head it out of danger, but it only made it so far to the feet of USF's Cassidy Helenihi, who drilled home the tying goal.

QUOTABLE

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "What a crazy game. It was a great first goal that Brie Welch scored. She's been due and has been playing excellent. We should have had a second or third goal and it's unfortunate, but credit to USF, they stayed alive. In overtime, I'm proud of our girls. I felt like we dug deep and created as many chances in overtime in 20 minutes as we did in the entire second half. Our girls showed that they wanted to win the game, it just wasn't meant to be today. We're proud of the performance and the spirit."

NOTABLE

  • This was the first overtime game of the season for Pepperdine.
  • The Waves are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with USF (5-0-2) in Malibu.
