Waves Begin Tucker Intercollegiate in Third Place

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Tremendous showings by Joe Highsmith and Clay Feagler on the first day of the season have put the Pepperdine men's golf team into third place after Friday's first two rounds of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.

After a morning round that saw the Waves go into a tie for fifth place with a 3-over 291 at the par-72 UNM Championship Course, Pepperdine improved mightily in the afternoon, firing an 11-under 277 that tied the best round of the day. With an 8-under 568 heading into tomorrow's final round, the Waves are six shots back of UNLV and three back of BYU.

- Making his college debut, freshman Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) had a terrific day and stands in fourth place with a 5-under 139 (71-68). His morning 1-under had four birdies and an eagle, and in the afternoon, he posted six more birdies for a 4-under 68.
- Junior Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) is tied for sixth place with a 3-under 141 (74-67). His 5-under 67 in the afternoon was one of the best scores of the day and moved him up 32 spots. He had three birdies in the first round, then came back with seven in the afternoon. Even-par after 10 holes, he had five birdies over the final eight holes.
- Junior Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) is tied for 19th place with a 1-under 143 (72-71). Four of his six birdies came in the first round.
- Freshman Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is also making his college debut and he's tied for 26th at 145 (74-71). Four of his six birdies came in his first career below-par round in the afternoon, including one on his final hole.
- Playing as an individual, senior Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) is tied for 32nd at 146 (74-73). He had a total of six birdies.
- Sophomore RJ Manke (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 39th at 147 (74-73). He had seven birdies.
