Men's Water Polo Drops to Stanford

MALIBU, Calif. – The tenth-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team got goals from five different Waves in its 13-7 loss to No. 4 Stanford on Sunday at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. Sean Ferrari and Sam Paur each had two goals for the Waves.

The Waves (6-4) limited the Cardinal (7-0) to just two goals in the first quarter, but the Cardinal bounced back to score five in the second.

GAME RECAP

After a solid defensive first four minutes of the game, Stanford jumped out to a 1-0 lead before George Mooney (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) answered to tie the game at one. The Cardinal scored one more goal in the period to take a 2-1 lead into the second.

In the second quarter, Stanford scored two goals in a row to start the period before Chris Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) buried a ball in the net to bring the lead to within two. Paur (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) got his first of two goals after another Stanford goal. The Cardinal scored three goals in a row to end the quarter with a 7-3 lead.

The Waves got on the board first in the fourth quarter, thanks to Paur's second goal of the afternoon. Keeper John Claude Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) had 13 saves on the day, none bigger than the three five-meter penalty saves he had in the third quarter. Stanford scored the final two goals of the quarter, moving to the fourth with a 9-4 lead over the Waves.

The fourth quarter saw the Waves get three goals, the most of any quarter on the day. Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS) had two back-to-back goals, and Ian Holder (Yorba Linda, Calif./Beckman HS) had one goal of his own. Stanford had four goals in the final period to take the game.
