MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 2 Pepperdine beach volleyball team earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships to be played from May 4-6 in Gulf Shores, Ala., as released by the NCAA Women's Beach Volleyball Committee on Sunday afternoon.
In the opening round, the Waves will take on No. 7-seeded and No. 8-ranked LSU at 9 a.m. PT. The Championships will take place at Gulf Shores Public Beach and will be televised by ESPN. On Friday, all duals will air on ESPNU, while on Saturday, the matches will be live on ESPN2 from between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Championship Sunday, the semifinal dual will be live on ESPN2 at 8:30 a.m. and the final will be live on ESPN at 11 a.m. All times listed here are Pacific Standard Time.
For the third year, the double-elimination tournament will be hosted by the city of Gulf Shores, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Orange Beach Sports Commission.
This is the highest seed the Waves (24-3) have earned in the NCAA Tournament since it came into existence in 2016, as the previous two years Pepperdine picked up the No. 3 seed. Pepperdine will face LSU, a team the Waves have played and beaten three times this season with a 4-1 win and a pair of 3-2 victories during the regular season.
UCLA grabbed the top-seed, while Hawai'i and Florida State round out the top-four seeds. Southern California, South Carolina, LSU and FIU close out the field of eight in that order. Throughout the seven years of AVCA or NCAA Tournament, only Pepperdine and Florida State have earned a berth in every single tournament.
Pepperdine has faced all opponents in the field with exception to Hawai'i this season. Against the other six teams, the Waves have collected a 13-2 record throughout the season, with the only two losses coming to top-ranked and seeded UCLA.
The double-elimination tournament is the NCAAs 90th National Championship. The field was selected from the 69 NCAA institutions sponsoring the sport of beach volleyball. Three teams were selected form the East Region and three teams were selected from the West Regions. The remaining two teams were selected at-large from the teams across the country. All eight teams were then seeded.
