April 18, 2018 MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team concludes regular season play this week with two West Coast Conference Matches against San Francisco and Santa Clara. Saturday's match aginst Santa Clara is Senior Day, where the team will be honoring Lautaro Pane and Pedro Iamachkine in their final match at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

SENIOR DAY: Before Saturday's match against Santa Clara, Pepperdine will honor it's two seniors, Lautaro Pane and Pedro Iamachkine. Pane and Iamachkine have been instrumental in the success of the Waves for the pasr four years, including twice reaching the final of the Oracle/ITA masters doubles draw as a pair, most recently in 2017.
LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, The West Coast Conference Championships begin in Claremont, Calif. The top six teams in the conference standings will make the tournament.
LAST WEEK: The Waves had WCC matches against San Diego and BYU.
In doubles play against San Diego, the Toreros took control early, getting a quick victory on court two. Dennis Uspensky and Yusuf Khamis were up on 4-3 on their opponents when the doubles point was clinched on court one.
Down the doubles point going into singles, the Waves battled, but couldn't make up any ground. Khamis was his first set 6-3 against Gui Osorio, but lost the second set 1-6. He was leading 3-0 in the third when the match was clinched. Uspensky dropped the first set in his match against 76th ranked August Holmgren, but won the second set 6-4. His third set did not start before the match was clinched by San Diego.
Against BYU, In doubles play, Lautaro Pane and Dane Esses continued their good form, winning their match on court one against Sean Hill and Jeffrey Hsu 6-4. After Dennis Uspensky and Yusuf Khamis fell in their match on three, the doubles point came down to court two. Max Mendelsohn and Brian Berdusco came from behind to tie the match at five games apiece, but were unable to complete the comeback.
After doubles play, the Cougars carried the momentum into singles, taking three of the six matches to take the match. Esses continued his hot streak, defeating Sam Tullis on court three 7-6, 4-6, 6-0. Pane won his first set in fifth position and was tied 5-5 in the second set when the match was clinched. Mendelsohn was down in his match when the match ended. The Cougars picked up wins on courts one, two and four to take the match.
THE WAVES: Pepperdine is 6-15 overall this season, with wins coming against South Alabama at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend along with Bucknell, UC Riverside and San Diego State at home. The team is 2-5 in WCC play, with victories coming over Saint Mary's and Gonzaga. TheThe Waves have picked up 34 singles and 21 doubles wins so far this season in dual action. Including tournament season, the Waves have posted a 65 singles and 25 doubles wins this season.
In singles dual action, Dane Esses has won nine matches, leading the team. Yusuf Khamis, Max Mendelsohn and Brian Berdusco have five wins each while Lautaro Pane has three. Pedro Iamachkine and Nicholas Baez have each won one match apiece.

OPPONENT NOTES: The Waves and Toreros have faced off a total of 44 times, dating back to 1974. Pepperdine holds a 33-10 advantage, but the Toreros have had the better of the Waves the past few years, taking seven of the last nine meetings. USD is 10-8 and 4-1 in WCC play. Last week, the Toreros beat San Francisco and lost to Saint Mary's.
Pepperdine and BYU have played 16 times, in which the Waves have a 15-1 advantage. The Cougars are 16-6 overall and 5-2 in WCC play this year. Last week, the Cougars had three WCC matches and went 2-1. BYU beat Saint Mary's and San Diego, but lost to Santa Clara.
ROSTER: Returning for the Waves are two seniors (Pane, Iamachkine), four juniors (Uspensky, Baez, Sborowitz, Garapedian) and one sophomore (Esses). Joining Pepperdine as freshmen are Max Mendelsohn, Brian Berdusco, Felipe Galvao and Yusuf Khamis.
FALL 2017: The Waves competed in six tournaments during the fall, with the highlight being the ITA Regionals. Pedro Iamachkine and Lautaro Pane took second place in the doubles draw, the best finish for the Waves. In their run to the final match, Pane and Iamachkine defeated two teams from WCC rival San Diego, as well as pairs from UC Santa Barbara and perennial powerhouse USC. The pair's strongest victory was against the team of Jake Devine and Thibault Forget of USC, which they won, 8-5.

Alex Sarkissian won the Silex Men's $15,000 Futures tournament in Vancouver in the summer of 2014. He went on to reach the semifinals of the US Open's inaugural American Collegiate Invitational. Robert Lindstedt, 1998 All-American and NCAA Doubles Championship finalist, has reached as high as #3 in the world doubles rankings. He won the doubles draw at the 2014 Australian Open and is a three-time Wimbledon finalist. Andre Begemann, member of the 2006 NCAA Championship-winning squad, can also be found playing on the pro tour, as can 2012 graduate Alex Llompart.
