GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Pepperdine baseball team scored three runs in the ninth inning, but came up one run short in an 8-7 loss to Missouri State on Sunday in the final game of the LeClair Classic at Lewis Field at LeClair Stadium.
The Bears (6-3) had two four-run innings, one in the fifth and one in the eighth, to pull ahead of the Waves (5-7), who had 14 hits on the day.

- Sophomore infielder Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 3-for-5 on the day, scoring three runs.
- Junior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapai College) also went 3-for-5, scoring one run with one RBI.
- Sophomore LHP Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) started on the mound, going 4.1 innings.
- Junior outfielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Ray, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) went 2-for-3 on the afternoon, with an RBI and a run scored.

The Waves struck first, scoring two runs in the fourth inning when, after McAfee reached second on a throwing error, Kanfer singled up the middle, scoring McAfee. He was then plated by Mike Malinchak after two walks moved Kanfer to third. The Waves led 2-0 after four innings of play.
Lucas started on the mound for the Waves, eventually being pulled with one out in the fifth. His final line was 4.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 K, 3 BB. He was relieved by Jonathan Pendergast. Missouri State scored four runs in the fifth, giving them a 4-2 lead after five.
Two innings later, in the seventh, the Waves scored a run on a Duncan McKinnon single, which plated Wills, who doubled down the line. Another double resulted in an inning-ending play at the plate to keep the score 4-3 in favor of the Bears.
The Waves scored another run in the eighth when after McAfee singled and got to third on a wild pitch, Malinchak beat out a would-be double play, allowing McAfee to score. After seven and a half innings, the score was tied at 4.
Missouri State came back in the bottom half of the eighth and scored four more runs, giving them an 8-4 lead going into the Waves' last chance.
Trailing four runs, the Waves got the bases loaded with nobody out to start the ninth. Qsar hit a single up the middle, scoring Billy Cook. Brandt Belk then scored on wild pitch, getting the Waves within a run. Malinchak then walked with the bases loaded to score the Waves' seventh run of the day. A fielder's choice at home and a fielder's choice to second ended the game.

The Waves are back in action at home on Tuesday, March 6, when Arizona State travels to Malibu for a midweek matchup. First pitch for that game is at 2 p.m.
