Final Stats

BOX SCORE

SPOKANE, Wash. " In a pitchers' duel fitting for each team's West Coast Conference opener, the Pepperdine baseball team allowed an unearned run to score in the bottom of the eighth and it was the difference as the Waves fell to Gonzaga 1-0 Friday night at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The Zags took advantage of a two-base error and a wild pitch with no outs in the eighth to eventually score on an RBI single for the game's only run " negating a strong outing by Pepperdine pitchers Wil Jensen, Michael Mahoney and Jeremy Farraye.

BIG WAVES

  • Sophomore Wil Jensen (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood HS) went 5.2 innings and gave up four hits and had five strikeouts in the no decision.
  • In relief, Michael Mahony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) and Jeremy Farraye (Ramsey, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) combined to not give up an earned run and only one hit over the final 2.1 innings.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves had their first chance to score in the top of the third as a lead-off walk to Aharon Modlin and a two-out single by Quincy McAfee put two on, but Jordan Qsar just missed one and flew out to dead center to end the threat.

The next scoring threat in the game came in the fifth inning as Gonzaga loaded the bases with two outs, but Wil Jensen got a ground out to end the frame to keep the game scoreless.

Gonzaga pushed across the lone run of the game in the eighth inning when a two-base error to lead off the frame followed by a wild pitch moved the runner to third and led to an RBI single to make it 1-0 Zags.

In the ninth, Qsar again put a charge into one and looked like he may tie the game, but the ball was caught at the warning track and the Waves eventually were retired to end the game.

NOTABLES

  • Jensen lowered his ERA to 0.52 on the season and has given up just two earned runs in 34.2 innings of work with 28 strikeouts.
