Waves Fight Hard Against #15 Cowboys

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team lost in a highly competitive match against #15 Oklahoma State on Thursday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, eventually falling 4-0 to the Cowboys.

The Waves (2-7) took the Cowboys (13-3) to three sets in four matches, leading in two of them before the match was clinched.

During doubles action, the Cowboys got off to a good start after Cash and Hammond defeated Uspensky and Esses 6-3. Pane and Berdusco fought hard all match and were rewarded with a 6-4 win over Scaglia and Theodorou. The doubles point came down to Mendelsohn and Khamis on court two. They went down 5-1 in the match, and down 0-40 in the final game before saving four match points to win the game and push the match to 5-2. They then took that momentum to even the match at 5-5 and then 6-6 before losing in the tiebreak to secure the doubles point for the Cowboys.

In singles, the Cowboys got two quick match wins on courts one and two to take the lead in the match 3-0. The Waves did not go down easy, with three matches going to three sets. Berdusco won the first set in his match against Scaglia and was winning in the third set before the match was clinched on a different court. Pane fought back after a 6-3 first-set loss to take the second set 6-4. His match also went unfinished. Khamis won his first set 6-4 and was going to a tiebreak in the second set when the match was clinched in the sixth position. On court six, Mendelsohn lost the first set, but dominated the second set 6-1. The match went to a dramatic third set, with Draheim closing things out 7-5 to complete the win for OSU.

The Waves also started competition at the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament on Thursday, with Max Mendelsohn and Brian Berdusco playing in their opening round matchup, defeating the unaffiliated pairing of Bradley Adams and Sebastian Alarcon 8-4. They play again Friday afternoon against Zachary Emert and Naara Shin. Dennis Uspensky and Dane Esses have their first round match tomorrow against Quinn Hirsohn and Jacob Hoenscherr of Pomona Pitzer.
