Waves Dominate Weber State in Home Opener

MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's basketball team dominated in all facets of the game as the team defeated visiting Weber State 68-47. Yasmine Robinson-Bacote led all scorers with 23 points.

The Waves are 5-1 for the first time in 20 years, and the Wildcats fall to 3-4.

BIG WAVES
  • Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) led all scorers with 23 pints, shooting 3-5 from beyond the arc, and grabbing seven rebounds.
  • Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) had a season-high 17 points, along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
  • Rose Pflug (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) had a season-high 11 pints, shooting a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc.
KEY STATS
  • The Waves outshot the Wildcats in all major shooting categories: 36.8%-30.4% shooting percentage, 36.4%-20% 3FG percentage and 90.9%-88.9% free throw percentage.
  • Pepperdine had 17 points from turnovers to the Wildcats' three, and the Waves also had 24 points in the paint to the Wildcats' 12.
  • The Waves had the advantage at the glass, out-rebounding the Wildcats 46-37.
GAME RECAP
The Waves never trailed in the game, taking the first lead with 8:56 on the clock in the first quarter, thanks to a jumper from Robinson-Bacote. Pepperdine jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a three pointer from Pflug before the Wildcats got on the board. Though the Wildcats scored the final four points of the period, the Waves had a 17-14 lead after eight minutes of play. Thanks to 13 points from Robinson-Bacote in the second quarter, the Waves jumped out to a lead as big as 13 points to go into the halftime break leading 35-22.

Pepperdine had the hot hand early in the second half, extending their lead to 19 with 7:42 left in the quarter. They got it back to 19 with three minutes left in the quarter on a Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) free throw. The lead would go back down to 15 at the end of the quarter as the Waves led 55-40. Weber State started the final period on a 5-0 run, but the steady defense and offensive assault of the Waves overpowered the Wildcats, holding them to only seven points in the fourth quarter, and scoring thirteen. The lead got to as many as 23, but landed at 21 as the final buzzer rang.
