PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's golf team began its final fall tournament in second place after Monday's first round of the Saint Mary's Invitational.

The Waves shot a 3-under 281 at the par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Club, but trail BYU by 10 strokes.

PLAYER SCORES

Junior Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) is tied for second place after a 3-under 68. He had five birdies on the day. He's seven shots out of the lead after BYU's Peter Kuest shot a tournament-record 61.
Freshman Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for eighth after a 1-under 70. He had four birdies on the front nine and one on the back nine.
Junior Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) is tied for 13th with an even-par 71. He had three birdies.
Freshman Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for 27th after a 72. He had two birdies.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Austin Murphy (Morgan Hill, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) is tied for 38th with a 73. He finished his round with three birdies in his final four holes.
Sophomore RJ Manke (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 46th after a 74. He had one birdie.

UP NEXT

The second round is Tuesday (the Waves will tee off on #10 beginning at 9:25 a.m.) and the third and final round is Wednesday.
