GAME RECAP
In the first quarter, the Hornets jumped out to the early 2-0 lead, but after a Robinson-Bacote free throw and a Bambrick jump shot, the Waves took the lead, a lead that they would not give up until the third quarter. After a 9-2 run, the Waves held the lead at 18-10 with 4:09 left to play in the quarter. The Waves kept the momentum going throughout the quarter, and went to the second leading 25-22.
Robinson-Bacote kept the scoring going in the second, scoring the first four points of the period for either team. She scored 12 of her 47 in the second period. The Hornets got to within three points of the Waves, but at the halftime break, the Waves were up five points, 52-47.
Sacramento State came out of the break hot, going on a 7-2 run to take the 55-54 lead before Pepperdine took a time out to regroup. After the time out, the lead changed six times in the third quarter. The Waves retook the lead for the final time with just over two minutes to play on a Robinson-Bacote jump shot, and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. Pepperdine took a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter 84-69. Robinson-Bacote had 36 points up to this point.
The fourth quarter was all Waves, who scored first in the quarter on two Fecske foul shots. With just two minutes to play, Robinson-Bacote had 41 points, just five points shy of tying Fannie Allen's 38 year-old single-game scoring record. She had a layup with 1:59 to play before being taken out of the game for a rest. She was put back in the game with a minute to play, and was fouled, sending her to the line where she made both shots. Right before time expired, she was fouled again, one point shy of tying the record. She made the first for 46 points, and drained the second, giving her the record.
QUOTABLE: "This game means a lot to our program," said Head Coach Delisha Milton-Jones. "We are sitting a 2-0 in our regular season. This is a position that we were hoping to be in when we made the schedule. The game that Yas had just shows what kind of machine she is offensively. We have to give it up to her teammates for giving her the opportunities that she had. To be able to rewrite the Record books like that, we are so proud of her."
"The coaches really tied to prepare us in the best way that they could," said Robinson Bacote of her historic performance. "Sac State is a unique team in the way that they press all game long. I had to be ready, and be prepared to go. I knew that my team had my back, and I am so happy to be on the receiving end of so many good passes. The Sac State guards were very aggressive, and in the face of our guards, and they did a great job of getting the ball up the court and into the hands of waiting players. It could have been anyone having this kind of game, and I am just happy I was able to do it."
