San Luis Obispo, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team defeated Cal Poly in Saturday's final game of the ShareSLO Holiday Beach Classic 70-63.
Paige Fecske led the Waves with 16 points.
The Waves picked up their third straight win over the Mustangs (1-6). This is the first time since the 1998-99 season that the team has started 3-0.
BIG WAVES
- Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) had 16 points, leading the team. She also went 2-6 from behind the arc.
- Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) had 12 points, along with six rebounds.
- Rose Pflug (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) went 3-4 from three-point range, and had 10 points.
KEY STATS
- The Mustangs outshot the Waves, 40.8% to 37.5%.
- The Waves narrowly controlled the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds to the Mustangs 37.
- Both teams were basically even from three-point range (43%).
GAME RECAP
Cal Poly got on the board first, but it was short-lived, as the Waves led from the 5:30 mark in the first period until the end of the game. Sitanggan had the first four points for the Waves in the first, until Pflug made two three-points shots in a row, giving the Waves a 10-6 lead with 5:08 left in the quarter. The Waves went on an 8-3 run to end the quarter, leading 20-13 after one.
The second quarter was much of the same, with the Mustangs pulling to within three points. Pepperdine pulled ahead again by as many as nine points in the second. Robinson-Bacote led the Waves in scoring in the second, with four as the Waves led 40-33 at the half.
Pepperdine pulled ahead in the third quarter, again by as many as nine points with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Robinson-Bacote scored eight points in the quarter, helping the Waves to a 57-48 lead after three.
Fecske scored five points in the fourth quarter, leading the Waves. The Waves' lead grew to 12 at the beginning of the quarter, but the Mustangs mounted a comeback in the last minute, getting to within six points, but the Waves defense was too strong, and held on for the win.
