MALIBU, Calif. – A seven-goal performance from freshman Balazs Kosa was not enough as the seventh-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team fell at home to fifth-ranked Pacific, 13-12.
The Waves (12-10, 2-1 GCC) also celebrated the team's two seniors, Sam Paur and Jens Cole before the game against the Tigers (10-8, 3-0 GCC).
GAME RECAP
The first quarter of play was very evenly matched. Kosa (Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc Altalanos Iskola es Gimnazium) got the Waves on the board first, but was quickly matched by Pacific. Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School) also scored for the Waves in the first. Pacific tied the game at two after one period of play.
The second quarter was all Pacific. The Tigers scored five goals in the period. Sean Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS) and Kosa scored for the Waves in the quarter, but the Tigers took a 7-4 lead into the third.
Kosa took the game over in the third, scoring six of his seven goals in the third. After trailing by three at the half, the Waves defense stepped it up to keep the Tigers to just two goals. Thanks to the freshman from Hungary, the Waves and Tigers were tied at nine heading into the final quarter of play.
Pacific started with the hot hand in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals, and allowing only one from the Waves from Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) until three minutes remained on the clock. Toth had two of his three goals in the final three minutes of play, but the Waves couldn't complete the comeback.
