MALIBU, Calif. – The first day of the Malibu Invite at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool was a great one for the Pepperdine women's swim and dive team, as four individuals and two relay teams placed first in their respective races. The Waves lead 529-435 after one day over LMU, the only other Division I team at the meet.
The Waves hosted the first day of the invitational, with five of the nine teams competing in the first session. "I think that our girls did phenomenally today," Head Coach Joe Spahn said. "I think the girls really got up and raced. There were several lifetime bests and in-season best times today. I couldn't be more proud."
MEET RECAP
The Waves got the meet started in a really positive way, winning the first event, the 200 free relay. Sammie Slater, Amy Griffin, Paige Brackett and Haley Bergthold teamed up for a 1:39.49. "I think that starting the day with a win in the 200 free relay really jumpstarted today," said Spahn. "Because of that, our girls really stayed aggressive and had a lot of confidence going into the rest of the races."
Olivia Kayye kept the winning ways going for the Waves in the 200 IM, finishing first with a time of 2:14.32. Shortly after, Trinity Ishikawa got a win of her own in the 100 backstroke thanks to a time of 2:10.57.
The Waves swept the top four spots in the 100 breaststroke, with Juju Chan (1:08.51) finished first, followed by Lauren Allard (1:09.35), Kayye (1:10.44) and Anna Riekhof (1:11.15). Griffin took the crown in the 100 free by just eight one-hundredths of a second with her time of 53.43. Rounding out the competition for the Waves was the 400 medley relay, in which Ishikawa, Chan, Bergthold and Griffin combined for the win, finishing with a 4:06.92.
In the one-meter dive, Taylor Basin had the top finish, with 233.10 points, followed by Ali North (212.50) and Paulina Holmberg (143.05).
