MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine women's volleyball team opened the Asics Classic with a straight sweep over Wyoming on Friday afternoon in Firestone Fieldhouse after amassing 25-20, 31-29 and 27-25 set wins. The Waves are now 5-2 on the season.
Hannah Frohling (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North HS) led the squad with 14 kills on a .333 success rate, while adding two aces. Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) posted her second-consecutive double-double with 11 kills, 10 digs and three aces for the Waves.

Pepperdine outperformed Wyoming with 48 kills on a .190 output, compared to 37 kills on a .179 clip. The Waves also marked eight aces, 46 assists and 52 digs, outhustling the opposition which posted four aces, 36 assists and 47 digs. The Cowgirls amassed 15.0 team blocks, however, which outblocked the Waves on a .50 team output.

In the first set, the Waves dropped to a 2-5 deficit, but battled back at the 6-6 mark to gain the lead and hold on through the rest of the set. Lyons started the push with three-consecutive aces and led the team attack towards an 18-14 lead late in the set. O'Harra posted back-to-back smashes of her own late in the set and Dyer finished things off with the Waves fourth ace of the set for 25-20 set win and a 1-0 advantage.
Wyoming pushed out to an 11-7 lead early in the second set and maintained a lead to a 24-19 advantage. Pepperdine refused to roll over, however, and six denied set points tied the set at 25's. The Waves had five set-point opportunities themselves, with back-to-back kills from Gross in the middle doing the final trick for a 31-29 set win.
With the 2-0 advantage, the Cowgirls came out strong in the third set, amassing a 7-5 lead early on. The Waves were quick to rally and close the gap for a 9-9 tie and continued to extend the lead en route to a 15-11 advantage late in the set. Pepperdine continued to hold the lead until the opposition tied the set at 22-22 with an ace. After another extra-point 25-25 tie, an attack error from the Cowgirls and a match-winning smash by Frohling put the Waves to a 27-25 set win and a 3-0 match victory.

Next, the Waves will challenge No. 8 Washington at 7 p.m. tonight (Friday). Tomorrow, Pepperdine will close out the Asics Classic tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. with a match-up against Missouri State, a team receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
