RIVERSIDE, California " Kevin Maeda moved up to third place on the Pepperdine men's cross country all-time 8K performance list, highlighting the Waves' efforts at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday morning.

Maeda finished in 20th out of 262 runners overall (12th out of 100 among Division I runners only) in a time of 24:38.7. He was previously eighth on the all-time list. The Waves' senior was injured last year and this was the first time that he had been the top-finishing Wave since his freshman year.

A few freshmen added their name to Pepperdine's all-time lists. Kyle Johnson is now ninth after running 25:25.5 in his first college 8K. On the women's side, Abbey Meck was competing in her first 6K and she now ranks ninth in that event with a time of 22:08.3.

Both Maeda and Nick Heath, who holds the school's 8K record, were making their season debuts. Heath finished close behind Maeda in 24:43.2, good for 27th overall and 17th among Division I runners.

Head coach Robert Radnoti said: "It was a great day of racing. We had perfect conditions. Our men did very, very well. Kevin and Nick were a bit banged up and even though they were a bit rusty, they both ran sub-25 by quite a bit so we're excited about that."

Kevin Maeda said: "It's always really competitive and really tiring but when you have someone pushing you it really helps. About three miles in, when I was starting to feel it, Nick came up by my side and we started running together, which was really good, so that was helpful."
