Waves Fall to CSUN in Four-Set Bout

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team fell to Cal State Northridge after a four-set battle in the Matadome on Friday night. In the Waves (3-2) second match of the Pepperdine-CSUN Challenge, the final set scores were 25-18, 25-12, 21-25, 25-23 to end the match.

Blossom Sato (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS/Mississippi State) led the Waves with her third Pepperdine career and second-straight double-double. She tabbed 34 assists and 15 digs in the effort. Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) and Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) led the attack effort with 11 and 10 kills on a.250 and .292 success rates respectively.

WAVES VS. MATADORS

The Matadors outhit the Waves with a .252 attack output on 57 kills, compared to Pepperdine's .095 output on 43 smashes. The Waves led the match with four aces compared to the oppositions two, but CSUN's 12 team blocks and 70 digs outperformed the Waves 7.0 team blocks and 57 digs throughout.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Waves struggled on the attack to open the first two sets, going down 2-0 with 25-18 and 25-12 set scores to start off the match.

After eight tied scores and three lead changes early in the third set, Pepperdine buckled down and started to strengthen the lead heading into the back stretch. Late in the set, the opposition tied the match at 21's, but the Waves gained the advantage after back-to-back Dyer kills, an ace by Frohling and a final set-winning smash by Lyons to make it a 25-21 final score.

With the Matadors holding a 2-1 advantage, the Waves came out strong. Each side exchanged leads throughout the set until the 23-23 mark. The opposition posted the final two points to win the match 3-1 on a 25-23 fourth set victory.
