MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team put up a run in the seventh, but left the bases loaded in their comeback attempt at Cal Poly, falling 5-3 to the Mustangs.
Pepperdine got on the board first in the game, getting a two-run double from Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) in the top of the third inning. Cal Poly would score five runs over the next three innings to take the lead.
The Mustangs scored three runs in the fourth inning, getting an RBI single, sacrifice fly and RBI ground out to go up 3-2. Runs in the fifth and sixth for the home team made it a three-run game.
Pepperdine threatened in the seventh inning, scoring a run on a Jeremy Goldenetz (Corona, Calif./Corona Santiago HS) single to make it 5-3. The Waves would load the bases with one out, but couldn't push across any more runs.
Barnett finished the game 2-for-4, driving in two of the three runs for Pepperdine. Two Mustang players had two-hit games as Cal Poly outhit the Waves 8-7.
Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) tossed 4.0 innings in the start, giving up three runs on three hits. Austin Gehle (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Wakeland HS/Grayson College) pitched 3.0 relief innings, giving up two runs and Christian Stoutland (Calabasas, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) tossed one scoreless inning of relief. Austin Dondaville got the win in relief for Cal Poly.
The Waves fall to 17-25 with the loss, while Cal Poly improves to 20-23. Pepperdine stays on the road this weekend, playing three games at San Francisco. All three contests can be seen live on TheW.tv.
