SUGAR GROVE, Illinois " Pepperdine sophomore Hira Naveed battled the elements and a tough course to post a remarkably good score of 2-over during Friday's first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships, putting her into a tie for fifth place.

The rest of the Waves were not so fortunate as bitter cold, high winds and on-and-off heavy rainfall greatly affected play at the par-72 Rich Harvest Farms. Pepperdine stands in 22nd place out of 24 teams after scoring a 42-over 330 in the first round.

The Waves have two days to make up an 11-stroke gap between them and 15th place. After Sunday's third round, the tournament will be cut down to 15 teams.

Pepperdine will again be paired with Texas Tech and North Carolina for Saturday's second round. They'll start on the first tee at 11:36 a.m. PT (1:36 p.m. CT).

The average score in the first round was 80.77 strokes.

Naveed (Perth, Australia) had three of the Waves' four birdies on the day. During her first nine holes she had one birdie and five bogeys, but she bounced back nicely on her next nine with two birdies, both on par-3s, and seven pars. Naveed is just two strokes off the lead after her 2-over 74.

Freshman Momoka Kobori (Rangiora, New Zealand) had the Waves' only other birdie on the day, but she's tied for 80th place after an 82. Junior Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) is tied for 115th with an 86, sophomore Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) is tied for 122nd with an 88 and junior Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.) is 129th with a 91.

Pepperdine is making its 12th NCAA Championships appearance and first since 2012. The Waves boast eight top-10 finishes and four top-five results at the NCAAs, including a program-best second-place showing in 2003.
