MALIBU, Calif. - Joe Caparis provided the heroics in the 14th inning on Saturday afternoon, as the Pepperdine baseball team outlasted Saint Mary's for a 2-1 marathon win at home.
Jordan Qsar tossed 5.0 scoreless relief innings to pick up the win and help the Waves even the season series at one win a piece. The teams will play the rubber game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Pepperdine struck first in the contest scoring in the bottom of the first inning after Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) capped three straight two-out singles with a run-scoring base hit to plate Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS). It wasn't until 13 innings later that the Waves would score again.
Saint Mary's tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth and both pitching staffs held for the next three frames to send it to extra innings. Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) tossed 3.0 scoreless relief innings after taking over to start the seventh, allowing two hits and striking out two in the outing.
Connor Loeprich threw the final 5.2 innings for the Gaels, with the Waves finally getting to the right-hander in the 14th. Saul Sandoval-Estrada (Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside HS) hit a one-out single and then was advanced to second on an Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) single to right. Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) stepped up with one out still and pulled a ball down the left-field line that stayed just fair, allowing Sandoval-Estrada to score from second.
It was Caparis' second walk-off hit of the season as he went 2-for-5 on the day. Five Waves had two-hit days and Pepperdine outhit the Gaels 13-9.
Wil Jensen (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood HS) got the start on the mound for Pepperdine and allowed just one unearned run in 6.0 innings pitched. The freshman righty scattered six hits while striking out two batters and walking one. Following Garcia, Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) took over to start extra innings and gave up just one hit and no runs while striking out four batters and walking one.
