Quiggle, Howard Advance to USAV Pairs Semifinal

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. - Brittany Howard and Corinne Quiggle, of the 2nd-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball team, advanced to the USAV Collegiate Beach Pairs semifinals after winning through pool play and two rounds of elimination action on Friday afternoon at the Hermosa Beach Pier volleyball courts.
All three Waves' pairs competing in the tournament played through pool play with three wins and no losses.
Howard (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS/Stanford) and Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) won two matches yesterday and closed pool play Friday morning with a 21-19, 21-14 win over USC's Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer. With the untarnished 3-0 record, the Waves' duo entered the round of 16 against Long Beach State's Rachel Nieto and Kobi Pekich, defating the duo with a 14-21, 21-13, 15-13 final mark to advance. In the quarterfinals, the duo went head-to-head with Florida State's Leigh Andrew and Brooke Kuhlman, downing the Seminoles with a 21-23, 23-21, 15-12 final result.
The pair will face USC's top pair Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes in the semifinals on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
The other Pepperdine pairs that finished pool play with wins this morning to advance to the elimination rounds were senior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and sophomore Madalyn Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) and freshman Deahna Kraft (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) and sophomore Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS).
To start the day, Roh and Knudsen bested USC's Abril Bustamante and Joy Dennis 21-15, 24-26, 15-13 to enter elimination action. The duo was downed in the round of 16 as they faced USC's Nicolette Martin and Terese Cannon with a pair of hard-fought 21-19 sets to bow out of the tournament.
Kraft and Wilson opened the day with a 21-14, 24-22 win over Jessalyn Kinlaw and Megan Rice to close pool play. The pair then fell in the round of 16 after facing Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund and seeing a 19-21, 21-12, 10-15 final mark to end the tournament.
