Waves Undefeated to Open USAV Pairs Championships

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. - The three pairs, from the 2nd-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball squad that opened the USAV Pairs Championship at the Hermosa Beach Pier on Thursday, went undefeated with six victories throughout the day.
No. 1-duo Delaney Knudsen and Madalyn Roh, No. 2-pair Brittany Howard and Corinne Quiggle, and No. 4-competitors Anika Wilson and Deahna Kraft all went 2-0 to begin the premier tournament. All six Waves are competing as individual pairs. The Waves, two of which received top-seeds for their respective pools, were the only teams that had all pairs in the tournament go undefeated on day one through pool play.
Other pairs that went 2-0 through the first day of pool action were USC's Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, Arizona's Madison and McKenna Witt and Long Beach State's Rachel Nieto and Kobi Pekich. After closing out pool play Friday, the best pairs from each pool will move on to the round of 16 and finish with the quarterfinals. The semifinals and championship matches will take place on Saturday, May 13.
No. 1-pair, Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) went 2-0 with a pair of two-set wins in 'Pool C.' The duo first downed Crissy Jone and Tia Scambray from Washington with a 22-20, 21-17 final score, before downing Madi Yeomans and Lily Justine of UCLA with a couple of 21-12 set scores. The pair tallied an 85-61 points output for a 1,393 point ratio after day one. The duo will face Abril Bustamante and Joy Dennis of USC tomorrow to close out pool play at 8:50 a.m.
The Waves' No. 2-pair, Howard (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS/Stanford) and Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) downed Adrianna Culbert and Katie Smith of South Carolina with a 15-21, 21-16, 15-10 final mark, before moving on to best Delaney Rohan and Chelsea Ross of Georgia State to close out day one in 'Pool E.' The duo posted a 1,078 point ratio after posting a 111-103 points output. They will take on Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer of USC at 9:40 a.m. to close out pool play on Friday.
Freshman Kraft (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) and sophomore Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) opened 'Pool B' action with a 21-19, 26-28, 15-11 win over Loyola Marymount's Sarah Sponcil and Savannah Slattery. The duo then downed Amy Neale and Jaelyn Greene of TCU with a 21-11, 14-21, 15-9 final mark to close the day. The pair finished the day with a 112-99 point output for a 1,131 point ratio. They will take on the top-seed of their pool Megan Rice and Jessalyn Kinlaw of Florida Atlantic Friday at 8 a.m.
