PORTLAND, Ore. - The Pepperdine baseball dropped a marathon pitcher's duel, 2-1 in the 16th inning. Portland scored twice in the bottom half of the inning after the Waves scored in the top half.
Pepperdine falls to 16-15 overall and 5-4 in West Coast Conference play. Portland improves to 7-24-1 overall, 3-8 WCC.
Pepperdine finally broke through in the 16th inning, getting a one-out double from Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) and then a single to advance him to third by Jeremy Goldenetz (Corona, Calif./Corona Santiago HS). Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) came through with the sacrifice fly to score the first run in 15 innings of baseball.
The Pilots came back and loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, working two bases-loaded walks to end the game after four hours and four minutes of play.
Wil Jensen (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood HS) tossed 8.2 innings in the start, giving up five hits and no runs while striking out four. Michael Mahony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) came in to get the final out of the ninth and push the game into extra innings. Mahoney would works 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out three batters.
The Waves posted 11 hits in the game, but left nine runners on base. The Pilots had eighth hits and left seven on.
Pepperdine heads to BYU next, playing a three-game series in Provo starting on Thursday.
