MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine baseball team scored once in the bottom of the 12th, but couldn't come up with a second run to extend the game against Santa Clara on Saturday, falling 2-1 to the Broncos.
Santa Clara got a two-out, two-run single from Jake Brodt in the top half of the 12th inning to break a scoreless tie and pick up the 2-1 win.
The Waves came back and plated a run on a groundout by Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS), but left the game-tying run on third base to end it.
The two pitching staffs dueled through 11 innings, with Santa Clara using five arms and the Waves using three. Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Catherdral Catholic HS) gave up no runs in 6.0 innings pitched after getting the start for Pepperdine, striking out four batters on the day. Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) tossed 4.0 scoreless innings of relief as well. Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) would take the loss.
Alonzo Billips picked up the win in relief for the Broncos after giving up two hits and no runs in 2.0 innings of work. Santa Clara starter Eric Lex went 7.0 innings, giving up five hits and no runs. Luke Martin-Resnick got the save.
The Waves fall to 17-23, 6-11 WCC and the Broncos move to 10-31, 6-11 WCC. Pepperdine and Santa Clara close out their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Malibu.
