MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team fell to Loyola Marymount 5-1 in the second game of the teams' three-game series. The PCH Cup rivals finish off their West Coast Conference series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Pepperdine falls to 17-20 overall, 6-8 WCC with the loss, while LMU moves to 26-13, 13-4 WCC, grabbing first place in the conference standings.
The Waves struggled early against LMU ace Cory Abbott, but finally broke through for a run against the righty in the sixth inning when Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) hit a two-out RBI double. That made it a 4-1 game, but was all the offense Pepperdine could muster.
LMU scored runs in the second and third innings, both times with two outs in the frame, and then posted a two-run fifth to make it a four-run contest. The Lions would add a run in the eighth inning on a Niko Decolati single.
Qsar had the lone two-hit day for the Waves as the home team came up with just four hits. Brandon Shearer went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Jamey Smart was 2-for-5 with two RBI for LMU.
Abbott went 6.0 innings, giving up four hits and one run to move to 8-1 on the year. Braydon Salzman picked up the save, throwing a scoreless final 2.1 innings.
Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Catherdral Catholic HS) got the start for the Waves, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out five. Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) tossed the final 4.0 innings, giving up one run on six hits.
