MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team finished off its series against Gonzaga with a dramatic walk-off win, as Joe Caparis drove in the game-winning run with a single in the ninth inning to give the Waves a 2-1 victory.
Jordan Qsar got the win on the mound and scored the game-winning run after doubling with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Pepperdine moves to 13-13 overall and 3-3 in West Coast Conference play, while Gonzaga falls to 14-13, 6-3 WCC. The Waves took two of three games from the Zags this weekend, holding Gonzaga to just six runs in the series.
Both teams scored runs in the third inning as the two pitching staffs dueled it out all day. Pepperdine got 4.2 innings from starter Wil Jensen, as he gave up four hits and the lone run. Michael Mahony came in with runners in scoring position in the fifth inning and got a strikeout to end the threat and keep the game tied. Mahony tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, stranding runners in the sixth and seventh.
Qsar would take over in the eighth inning after playing right field for most of the day and proceeded to shut down the Zags for the final two innings, not allowing a hit in the six batters he faced. He then doubled into the gap in the ninth, giving the Waves a runner in scoring position with one out. After a strikeout, Caparis stepped to the plate and on a 3-1 pitch, dumped a single into right field that scored Qsar. It was the freshman's first career RBI.
Gonzaga went through four pitchers in the game, getting 7.0 innings from starter Casey Legumina, who allowed five hits and one run. The Waves scored the game-winner off of the Zags' closer, Wyatt Mills, who entered the game with four saves and a 1.26 ERA.
The visitors scored their lone run in the top of the third inning, when Tyler Frost singled in a run. Jensen settled down after allowing another single, getting a groundout and strikeout to strand runners on second and third.
Pepperdine came back and scored on a Jeremy Goldenetz single in the bottom half of the inning after Saul Sandoval-Estrada and Aharon Modlin got back-to-back singles early in the frame.
The Waves posted seven hits to Gonzaga's six in the game. The Zags left 12 runners on base and Pepperdine left five on.
The Waves will be back in action on Tuesday when they head to CSUN and then will travel to Portland for another WCC series starting on Friday.
