April 19, 2017 MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine Women's Swimming and Diving Head Coach Nick Rodionoff announced the Waves' 2017 recruiting class this week, with 10 players joining the Pepperdine squad.
"We are excited to welcome Leila, Paige, Amy, Trinity, Cybele, Nicole, Sammie, Lia, Megan and Kate to the swim and dive team in the fall," said Rodionoff, who enters his 18th season next year. "We expect them each to fit in very well and look forward to them contributing to our program."
Here's a look at the coaches' scouting report on the 2017 class:
Leila Anawalt - Leila was born and raised in Malibu. She currently attends Oaks Christian High School and has competed there all four years. Leila enjoys and excels in surfing, dancing, academic endeavors, loves to travel and is very service oriented. She is currently on the Dean's List at her high school and is very enthusiastic about joining the Pepperdine community and the women's swim and dive team in the fall. She comes to us with a willingness and determination to continue achieving personal bests. Leila is a diver/sprint free.
Paige Brackett - She verbally committed to Pepperdine in the fall and lives in Folsom, Calif. where she attends Granite Bay High School. Paige is dedicated to the sport and wants to continue to achieve success in the pool and academics, while strengthening her character. She expects to flourish in the Christian atmosphere and believes that Pepperdine has everything to help her reach her full potential. Paige swims 50/100/200/500/1000/1650 freestyle and the 100/200/400IM.
Amy Griffin - Amy is also a California native from Seal Beach, where she attends Los Alamitos High School and swims for Golden West Swim Club. Amy considers herself (and so do we) a great match for Pepperdine. She has a heart for service and leadership and is looking forward to growing and maturing in spiritual faith. Amy's strengths are in 50/100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. She is looking forward to being a part of the team in the fall.
Trinity Ishikawa - Trinity is from La Mesa, Calif., where she attends Valhalla High School and has always dreamt of swimming at the Division I level. She has trained diligently to become a faster swimmer, focuses on the "big meets" and has seen her hard work pay off as her times have dropped. In addition to swimming, Trinity is drawn to the student activities, student/teacher ratio, and Christian environment that Pepperdine has to offer. Trinity specializes in the 100/200 back, 50/100 free and 100 fly. Pepperdine is all she has ever wanted in a school.
Cybele Jung - Cybele comes to us from Jupiter, Fla. She attends Indiana University High School and swims for East Coast Aquatic Club. She enjoys playing the marimba, yoga, tennis, water polo and cooking. Cybele is excited about the academic challenges at Pepperdine and hopes to study Chemistry and German. She spent her junior year in Vienna, Austria, and swam competitively there. She is a NCSA Junior National and Arena Grand Prix Qualifier. In the pool, Cybele excels in 50/100/200 freestyle and the 100/200 breaststroke.
Nicole Matheson - Nicole comes to us from Peoria, Ariz. She attends Sunrise Mountain High School, swimming for them and her club team, Scottsdale Aquatic Club, as well. This year, Nicole has learned to "expect the unexpected" as well as how to overcome obstacles. She is relentless in her pursuit of success, both in and out of the classroom. Nicole is a very versatile swimmer, competing in 100/200/500/1000 freestyle, 200 back, 200 fly and 200/400IM. Recruited by several prestigious schools, she has chosen Pepperdine.
Samantha Slater - Sammie is from Sonora, Calif. where she attends Sonora High School and presently swims with Tuolumne County Aquatics. Sammie is a hard worker, swims freestyle and backstroke, was captain of her swim team this year and is very eager and excited to officially be joining the Waves. Sammie enjoys swimming, reading and writing, as well as spending time with family and friends. She is an AP Scholar with Honors and a four-time USA Swimming Academic All-American. We think Sammie is a perfect fit for Pepperdine and our team.
Lia Thomas - Lia comes to us from Cincinnati, Ohio. She currently attends Wyoming High School where she has had high success both in and out of the pool. Pepperdine is her top choice of several prestigious schools to which she applied. She is also carrying on a family tradition since her mom attended Pepperdine as well.
