MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team scored three late runs, but couldn't come all the way back against UC Santa Barbara at home on Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-3 to the Gauchos.

The Waves put up three runs in the bottom half of the seventh, but a four-run top of the seventh held up for the visitors. Pepperdine falls to 17-18 with the loss, while UCSB moves to 16-18.

The Gauchos broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth, loading the bases and pushing a run across on a sacrifice fly. Max Green (Rolling Hills Estate, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) would come out of the pen for the Waves and end the threat without further damage, though, getting a strikeout and lineout to strand two runners.

UCSB broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, getting a two-run homer from Austin Bush and a two-run single from Armani Smith.

Pepperdine finally found its offense in the home-half of the seventh, when Jeremy Goldenetz (Corona, Calif./Corona Santiago HS) doubled down the line with the bases loaded, scoring two runs. Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) would follow with an RBI groundout, but that was it for the Waves. UCSB added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

Ben Brecht got the win for the visitors, tossing 7.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits. Shea Barry got the save for the Gauchos, working a scoreless final two frames.

Pepperdine used six pitchers on the day, getting 3.0 scoreless innings from Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) in the start. Green and Benjamin Slattery (Geneva, Ill./Geneva HS) each had scoreless relief outings.

Goldenetz was 2-for-3 at the plate in the game to lead the Waves. Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) went 2-for-4 on the day. Kenny Corey was 4-for-5 to lead the Gauchos.

The Waves are back in action this weekend, when they host Loyola Marymount for a three-game PCH Cup series. First game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.
