Men's Tennis Hosts Final Two Home Matches this Week

GAME NOTESMALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team closes out home action at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center with two West Coast Conference match-ups on Friday and Saturday this week, hosting BYU and San Diego.

DUAL MATCH 18: Friday (April 14), Pepperdine (9-8, 4-1 WCC) vs. BYU (13-9, 6-1 WCC) at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. at 1 p.m.

DUAL MATCH 19: Saturday (April 15), Pepperdine vs. San Diego (11-8, 3-2 WCC) at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. at 2 p.m.

LOOKING AHEAD: After the final home weekend this week, the Waves will close out regular season play at Portland and Gonzaga on April 21 and 22 before traveling to Claremont, Calif. for the WCC Championships.

SENIOR WAVES: Prior to the match, seniors Stefan Menichella, Guilherme Hadlich and Tom Hill will be honored for all the work they have done for the Pepperdine men's tennis program these past four years.

THE WAVES THIS SEASON: Pepperdine possesses a 9-8 overall record and a 4-1 West Coast Conference record heading into the second-to-last week of play this week. In singles play, the Waves have collected a 50-33 dual record to earn a .602 winning percentage. Guilherme Hadlich leads the Waves in the top-spot with a 9-6 overall record in dual play, posting one win against nationally ranked opponents. He is currently on a four-match winning streak for his team. Stefan Menichella, Pedro Iamachkine and Lautaro Pane have all competed in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions this season in singles. Menichella has gone 8-5 in dual action with a 4-3 record in the No. 2 spot and 2-1 records in both the third and fourth position. Iamachkine has gone 8-6 among dual competition this season, including a 3-2 record at No. 3, a 3-1 record at No. 4 and a 2-3 record at No. 2. Pane possesses a 4-8 record in dual action with a 3-2 record when playing in the No. 3 position. Jack Van Slyke has been a mainstay in the No. 5-slot for his team, collecting a 7-4 dual record and winning the last three-consecutive matches. Dane Esses has also been clutch at the No. 6 position, amassing a 9-3 dual record and winning his last six-straight matches for Pepperdine.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Pepperdine has been crushing doubles opposition this season, winning the doubles point in 13-of-17 total matches played at this point in the season. As a team, the Waves have amassed a .651 winning percentage in dual action with a 28-15 record against opponents. Stefan Menichella and Jack Van Slyke hold down the top-spot and have collected seven wins in dual action, including one win against a nationally ranked opponent. Guilherme Hadlich and Gabriel Sidney have been near-unstoppable in the No. 2 position, earning a 12-2 record in dual action including a 1-1 record against nationally ranked competition and a current six-match winning streak. Pedro Iamachkine and Lautaro Pane close out the Waves' doubles efforts with a 7-3 record since earning the No. 3-slot. As a pair, Iamachkine and Pane have gone 8-4 this season overall.

LAST WEEK IN THE WAVEDOM: Pepperdine split the road week last weekend, falling 4-2 at San Francisco before defeating Santa Clara with a 4-1 result. At USF, the Waves fell in doubles action as the Dons collected wins on courts one and three. The Waves won on courts five and one as Jack Van Slyke and Guilherme Hadlich collected two-set wins respectively, but the opposition was successful on courts two, three and four to finish off the match with the WCC win.

Against SCU, Pepperdine made quick work of doubles action, downing the Broncos on courts two and three as Hadlich and Gabriel Sidney bested their opponents 6-2 and Pedro Iamachkine and Tom Hill picked up a 6-2 win almost simultaneously. In singles, Sidney bested his opponent on court six with a 6-1, 7-5 victory, before Hadlich dominated his opposition in the No. 1 position with a 6-1, 6-3 win to put the Waves in clinching territory. The Broncos won on court two to break the goose egg, but Dane Esses clinched the match for the Waves with a three-set bout on court five, coming back from a 5-7 loss in set one to defeat his competitor 6-1, 6-4 for the clinch.

OPPONENT NOTES: Pepperdine holds a 15-1 overall record against BYU all-time, dating back to the 1982 campaign when the Waves won 8-1 at home. From 1982-2015, Pepperdine won 14-consecutive matches before the Cougars won their first match in 2016 on the road with a 4-2 win. The Waves defeated BYU 4-3 in the semifinal round of the WCC Championships last season to earn a spot in the finals against San Diego. This season, the Cougars hold a 13-9 overall and 6-1 WCC record against opponents. The team has gone 2-6 when playing on the road. Last weekend the Cougars defeated WCC teams Gonzaga and Saint Mary's with 4-0 sweeps, one on the road and one at home.

Pepperdine holds a 32-9 overall record against San Diego all-time, dating back to the 1974 season when the Waves collected a 7-2 victory. The Waves have had several winning streaks, first from 1974-88 with nine-consecutive wins at home, then again with eight matches from 1990-2002 and then lastly from 2003-2014 with 14-striaght wins. The Toreros are currently on a six-match winning streak against the Waves from the 2014-16 seasons, including a win in the WCC Championships finals last season to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

ORACLE/ITA PRESEASON RANKINGS: The Waves had one single and two doubles partnerships ranked in the 2016-17 preseason rankings released on September 13. Senior Guilherme Hadlich enters the fall campaign ranked #117, while he and sophomore partner Gabriel Sidney were tabbed #18 in the rankings. Junior duo Pedro Iamachkine and Lautaro Pane also ranked in doubles, earning the #59 slot.

FERREIRA: Marcelo Ferreira enters his third season as head coach of the Pepperdine men's tennis team in 2016-17. After serving as the Waves' associate head coach in 2013-14, he was elevated to head coach in July 2014. Ferreira is now the 14th head coach in the program's storied history, dating back to the 1940s. His record after two seasons at the helm of the squad is 32-21.
