SAN LUIS OBISPO, California " Izzy Connell and Emma Engelland ran what would have been school-record times but won't count because they were wind-aided, two of the Pepperdine track team's top performances on Saturday at the Cal Poly Invitational.
Connell (Campbell, Calif./The Harker School) took first place in the women's 100 meters in a time of 11.88 seconds, but with a wind measuring of 2.1 miles per hour, just over the legal limit. The Waves' senior already owns the school record of 11.95 seconds, which she re-set earlier this month. Connell was first out of 24 competitors.
Engelland (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS), a freshman, recorded a time of 15.24 seconds in the women's 100-meter hurdles but again with a +2.1 wind-aided time. The school record is 15.38 seconds, set by Tori Occhipinti in 2015.
"It was a pretty good day," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "It was a good tuneup as we get ready for our final meets, which is kind of our championship season. We're trying to get everyone ready for UCLA, Pomona and Long Beach State, because those will be tough meets."
Other top finishes for the women included senior Gabrielle Ellis (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) placing fourth in the 100 meters, senior Kendall Dunn (Aurora, Colo./Cheney HS/Arapahoe HS) taking fifth in the 800 meters and freshman Samantha Maness (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton HS) finishing fifth in the 5,000 meters. Dunn's time of 2:18.81 moves her into #3 on the Waves' all-time list in the 800.
For the men, freshman Treet Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) turned in a top-10 finish as he was seventh in the 800 meters.
Others who were the top Waves in various events were junior Claudia Rodriguez (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet HS) in the women's 200, freshman Izabela Garcia-Arce (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) in the women's 400, freshman Cori Persinger (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) in the women's 1,500, senior Torin Wile (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) in the men's 400 and senior Nick Blanchard (Portland, Conn./Portland HS) in the men's 1,500.
Pepperdine will be at the UCLA Legends Invitational next Friday and Saturday (March 31-April 1).
