RESULTS| PHOTO GALLERYMALIBU, Calif.: The Pepperdine men's tennis team dominated the courts at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center this Wednesday afternoon, rolling over Princeton 6-1. After securing the doubles point, the Wvaes collected wins on five-of-six singles courts to finish non-conference action on a high-note.
The action was tight in doubles after the 26th-ranked doubles pair for the opposition took a first win on court one. Junior duo Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) then evened the action on court three with a solid 6-4 victory over Jimmy Wasserman and Jonathan Carcione to put the heat on court two.
Senior Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and sophomore Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) had battled to a 6-6 tie with Thomas Colautti and Payton Holden late in the set, forcing a tiebreak option to see who would clinch doubles action. After going point-for-point throughout the majority of the tiebreak en route to another 6-6 tie, the Waves closed the door and earned the next two points to clinch the doubles point with a 7-6 (6) set.
In singles action, the Waves dominated in first sets, winning on four-of-six courts to pull ahead early. Sophomore Jack Van Slyke (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Laurel Springs HS (Calif.)) was the first to finish on court five against Payton Holden as he crushed his opponent 6-1, 6-4 to extend the Waves' advantage to 2-0 on the day.
The on court three, senior Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) worked for a 7-6 (4) first set win, before dominating Kial Kaiser with a 6-2 second set to put Pepperdine within grasp of the clinch. Freshman Dane Esses (Houston, Texas/Memorial HS) was up to the task on court six as he bested Jimmy Wasserman with a 6-2, 6-4 decision to clinch the overall match for the Waves.
As both coaches elected to finish the match entirely, Hadlich on court one, Pane on court two and Iamachkine on court four were still in action.
Princeton picked up the victory on court two to make the team's way onto the board, but Iamachkine and Hadlich would both be victorious.
First on court four, Iamachkine had worked for a 7-6 (8) win in set one to pull ahead early. He then finished out the match with a 6-4 win in set two over Luke Gamble to make it a 5-1 Waves' match with one court still in action.
Hadlich had dropped his first set 4-6 to Thomas Colautti on one, but worked hard for a 7-5 victory in the second set. As the match was clinched earlier, the final set was to be played in super tie-break fashion for a first-to-10 set. Each side worked point-for-point en route to an 8-8 tie. The opposition pulled ahead 9-8, but Hadlich was resilient and persevered to tie the set 9-9 and then overcome his opposition for an 11-9 win to make it a 6-1 overall Waves' win on the day.
