MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team held on for a 4-3 win over Stony Brook on Tuesday, getting some clutch relief pitching while making the most of four hits on the day.
Michael Mahony preserved a one-run game with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, getting a pair of strikeouts to end the contest and move Pepperdine to 7-7 on the year. The Seawolves fall to 4-10 with the loss.
The Waves broke through with their first two hits and three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, loading the bases with one out. Aaron Barnett grounded in a run and then Nick Costello beat out an infield single to score two more for the Waves.
Jonathan Pendergast would strand two Stony Brook runners in the next half inning, keeping the Waves in front 3-0 and getting through five innings with the advantage. Pendergast gave up four hits and no runs in 5.0 innings of work, striking out four batters and walking four as well. He moves to 2-0 on the year.
Chase Lambert doubled in a what ended up being the winning run to give the Waves a four-run cushion in the fifth inning, but the Seawolves came back with a run in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-1 game.
Stony Brook would load the bases and score two runs in the bottom of the ninth before Mahony entered and picked up his first save of the year. The redshirt freshman has yet to give up a run in three appearances this season.
Kiko Garcia tossed 2.0 innings, stranding two runners in both the sixth and seventh to keep the Waves in front. Max Green then worked a scoreless eighth, getting a double play to end the frame.
Four different Waves recorded hits in the game. The Seawolves posted nine hits, but left 15 runners on base. Pepperdine left just four runners on.
