MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team lost another close game to California on Sunday, falling 3-1 despite a strong outing on the mound from freshman Wil Jensen.

Jensen tossed 8.0 innings and gave up just two earned runs, but was outdone by Cal sophomore Joey Matulovich, who pitched a complete game in the win. Pepperdine falls to 6-7 with the loss, while the Golden Bears move to 7-7 on the year.

Matulovich gave up five hits and just one earned run, striking out 10 and walking none to move to 2-0 on the year. Jensen struck out four and walked three, while scattering nine hits.

The Waves got on the board first, getting a run in the fourth inning. Jordan Qsar and Chase Lambert hit back-to-back doubles, then Qsar was brought home on an RBI groundout from Aaron Barnett. Cal came back with a run in the top of the sixth inning, tying the game with a two-out RBI single by Andrew Vaughn.

Cameron Eden hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to make it a 3-1 game. It is the second straight game that a late homer ended up being the deciding factor for the Bears.

Five different Waves recorded hits in the game and six different Cal players did.

Qsar tossed the ninth inning for Pepperdine, giving up no hits and no runs, while walking one. The Waves got a pinch-hit single from Jeremy Goldenetz in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't do anything with hit as he was caught stealing.

Pepperdine stays home for its next four games, hosting Stony Brook on Tuesday and then Grand Canyon and Long Beach State over the weekend. Tuesday's game will be at 3 p.m. and can be seen live on TheW.tv.
