Feb. 26, 2017

Final Stats

TAMPA, Fla.: The 40th-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis team were felled in the second match of the team's two-match road trip this Sunday afternoon, falling 4-2 to 39th-ranked South Florida. After taking the doubles point, the Waves fell in singles to drop the match and close out the trip.

The Waves (3-5, 1-0 WCC) opened the day against South Florida (3-4) with a solid showing in doubles action, winning the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. Pepperdine struck first with a 6-3 win on court three, courtesy of junior duo Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) who downed Vadym Kalyuzhnyy and Nils Heimer. The opposition then split the action with a victory on court one.

Shortly after on court two, senior Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and sophomore Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) went point-for-point en route to a 6-6 tie. In the tiebreaker, the Waves dominated the action, defeating Peter Bertran and Justin Roberts with a 7-2 score for the 7-6 (2) victory, propelling the team into singles with a 1-0 advantage on the day.

South Florida came out strong in singles, collecting wins on courts five, one and four to gain a 3-1 lead. Pepperdine then countered with a Iamachkine 6-3, 6-2 victory on court two over Roberts to start a Waves' comeback effort.

Pepperdine had two courts still in action with USF, Pane on three and sophomore Jack Van Slyke (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Laurel Springs HS (Calif.)) on six. Pane and Van Slyke each dropped the first set, but rallied back in the second. Pane won his second set with a 7-6 tiebreak to extend it to a third, but 83rd-ranked Alberto Barroso of the Bulls eventually won with a 6-4 final score to end the day. Van Slyke's match was abandoned due to the clinch.

Next up for the Waves is a trip to San Diego, Calif. to take on San Diego State on March 2 at 2 p.m. Follow @PeppTennis on Facebook and Twitter for immediate updates and go to PepperdineWaves.com for full recaps, results and more.
