
Pepperdine Welcomes Washington to Malibu on Sunday

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team returns to Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center this Sunday to host Washington in a dual set at noon.

LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, the Waves stay in Malibu, hosting No. 3 California on February 12 at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
THE WAVES THIS SEASON: The Waves have gone 1-2 overall and 1-0 in West Coast Conference play to open the 2017 dual campaign. In the opening weekend, Pepperdine bested Wells Fargo PCH Cup rivals LMU to begin on a high note. Last weekend, the Waves posted two very well-played tough matches against Tulane and Cal Poly, falling just short. In singles play, the Waves have gone 55-58 overall, with an 11-6 record in dual action. Pepperdine has gone 2-1 from the one's, two's, three's and six's positions, courtesy of Guilherme Hadlich, Stefan Menichella, Pedro Iamachkine and Dane Esses respectfully.
In doubles action, the Waves have gone 14-18 overall, with a 4-4 record in WCC play. Hadlich and doubles partner Gabriel Sidney have gone 2-0 since the dual campaign started, playing both matches in the number two position and one against a nationally ranked opponent. Menichella and Jack Van Slyke have posted one win in the number one position, along with Iamachkine and Tom Hill in the number three position.
OPPONENT NOTES: Washington already has six games under the belt this season, with a 5-1 overall record. The Huskies downed Seattle twice, Utah State, Gonzaga and Alabama once, before falling to 5th-ranked Georgia. All-time, Pepperdine and Washington have faced off 14 times, with the Waves holding a 10-4 overall record with a perfect 6-0 record when playing at Ralphs-Straus. Pepperdine went on a seven-match winning streak from 2009-15, winning three of those matches in sweeping fashion. Last season, the Huskies got the better of the Waves up north with a 4-1 win on Washington's home turf.
THE WAVES AT ITA KICK-OFF WEEKEND: The Waves put up big efforts at Berkeley for ITA Kick-Off Weekend, but fell short with two matches against Tulane and Cal Poly. First, against Tulane, the Waves were felled in the doubles point, despite a 6-3 win on court two from Guilherme Hadlich and Gabriel Sidney. Then in singles play, Stefan Menichella and Dane Esses earned wins in position's two and six respectively, but the Waves were downed on courts one, three and five for the opposition to clinch the 4-2 victory.
Then, in a 4-3 bout with Cal Poly, the Waves won doubles on court two as Hadlich and Sidney bested 53rd-ranked Timothy Tan and Garrett Auproux with a 6-1 decision, but eventually dropped the doubles point overall. Singles play began with CPSLO taking wins on courts four and two to pull ahead 3-0 but the Waves evened the match as Hadlich defeated 45th-ranked Benjamin Donovan, and Pedro Iamachkine and Jack Van Slyke also earned victories. Esses went head-to-head with is opponent, taking the first set 6-4, but fell 6-4 in the second to head to a third. Despite going point-for-point to the tie-break, the freshman was felled 7-5 for CPSLO to pull ahead with a narrow win.
THE FALL CAMPAIGN: The Waves competed in a wealth of tournaments last fall, highlighted by strong individual finishes at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships hosted by Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. Guilherme Hadlich and Pedro Iamachkine each reached the quarterfinal round of the tournament which began with a 128-man singles draw. Altogether, the Waves collected 27 match-wins in singles and five in doubles. Iamachkine and Dane Esses, who each posted five singles wins, followed closely by Hadlich and Gabriel Sidney who each posted four.
ORACLE/ITA PRESEASON RANKINGS: The Waves had one single and two doubles partnerships ranked in the 2016-17 preseason rankings released on September 13. Senior Guilherme Hadlich enters the fall campaign ranked #117, while he and sophomore partner Gabriel Sidney were tabbed #18 in the rankings. Junior duo Pedro Iamachkine and Lautaro Pane also ranked in doubles, earning the #59 slot.
FERREIRA: Marcelo Ferreira enters his third season as head coach of the Pepperdine men's tennis team in 2016-17. After serving as the Waves' associate head coach in 2013-14, he was elevated to head coach in July 2014. Ferreira is now the 14th head coach in the program's storied history, dating back to the 1940s. His record after two seasons at the helm of the squad is 32-21.
