MALIBU, Calif. " Zack Rhodes of the No. 8 Pepperdine men's water polo team became the first goalkeeper in program history to reach 1,000 saves in his career. He reached the milestone on Oct. 13 against Long Beach State, and currently has 1,058 in total.
Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) earned the starting job between the posts as a freshman, immediately making an impact for the Waves. The team had graduated former all-time saves leader Bence Valics (889) the year before, and Rhodes became the perfect fit. He had 268 saves in his first year in goal.
He followed his stellar freshman campaign with a very impressive 228-save sophomore year and a then-career year with 278 saves in his junior year. Rhodes currently has 283 saves in this, his fourth and final year as a Wave, with one more regular season game, and postseason hopes.
"Zack is an amazing leader in and out of the water for this team," said Associate Head Coach Merrill Moses. "He is the defensive captain of the team, and he has done a great job being consistent and giving us the chances to win close games throughout his career."
Rhodes and the rest of the Waves conclude the regular season on Friday, hosting No. 10 UC Santa Barbara at 6 p.m. Friday will also be senior night, honoring the 10 seniors on the team.
