
WCC Cross Country Championships Are Friday

MALIBU, California " Championship season arrives this week for the Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams as nine runners from each squad will head north to take part in the West Coast Conference Championships on Friday morning.

The championships are being hosted by San Francisco at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland. The women's 6K is at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 11 a.m. TheW.tv will have live coverage online.

- Pepperdine's nine men running at the WCC Championships are senior Kevin Maeda (Highland, Calif./Citrus Valley HS), junior Nick Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS), sophomores Treet Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) and Jalen Frantal (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central HS) and freshmen Alex Egan (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), Preston Gromer (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh HS), Kyle Johnson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS), Justin Touhey (Stony Point, N.Y./Don Bosco Preparatory HS) and Tim Wells (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs HS).
- The nine women include sophomores Izabela Garcia-Arce (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) and Tatum Rask (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) and freshmen Cassidy Aberson (Vacaville, Calif./Vacaville HS), Caroline Archer (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy), Emma Battin (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East HS), Abbey Meck (Santa Cruz, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley HS), Taleah Phillips (Gibsons, B.C., Canada/Anacortes HS), Lindsay Sanger (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson HS) and Amanda Stahl (Clinton, Mass./Advanced Math & Science Academy).
- Heath is the program's record-holder in both the men's 8K and 10K. Also in the 8K, Maeda is #3, Johnson is #9 and Frantal is #14. On the women's side, Meck is #9 in the 6K.
- Heath is coming off a victory at the 6K Highlander Invitational on October 14 for his fourth career victory. He came in 18th place at last year's WCC Championships, becoming the first runner on the men's team to finish in the top 20 since 2007.
- Meck has been the women's top runner at all four meets this season.

- Pepperdine's women have three second-place finishes at the WCC Championships (1988, 1993, 1999). The men's team's best finish was third place in 1997.
- Three Pepperdine women have been WCC champions: Kari Baerg in 1988, Kim McElhinney in 1989 and Rebecca Freebury in 2000.

Head coach Robert Radnoti says:
"Things look really good for us. We've been training all season, all year, for this, and it's really exciting. We haven't seen the course before but we've got a videotape of it and we've been studying it and the course map. We'll head up tomorrow early so we'll be able to preview the course and talk about it tomorrow night, and then race on Friday morning."
