SEATTLE, Washington " The Pepperdine women's track team concluded its short indoor season with the two-day UW Invitational on Friday and Saturday, and the second-year program established another few records over the weekend.
"It was a really outstanding competition up here with some future Olympians in the field," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "It was a very strong, competitive event, and a good one for us to close out the indoor season. This will really get the sprinters ready for the outdoor season, which begins in three weeks."
Freshman Emma Engelland (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) lowered her own mark in the 60-meter hurdles, running 9.72 seconds.
"Emma got off to a great start and finished strong in a really tough heat," Radnoti said.
Freshman Samantha Maness (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton HS) became only the second Wave ever to run the 5,000 meters, but she bested Katie Engel's time from last year so Maness now holds the school record with a time of 19:18.43.
The Waves also ran the distance medley for the first time ever, so the team of freshman Bri Wilson (Murrieta, Calif./Linfield Christian School), freshman Izabela Garcia-Arce (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS), Grace Palmer and freshman Cori Persinger (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) will go into the books with a time of 13:10.35.
Senior Gabrielle Ellis (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) competed in the 60 meters. She won her heat in qualifying and moved into the preliminary rounds, where she matched her PR set in the season's first meet of 7.81 seconds. Freshman Talya Holenstein (Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep) was the team's top runner in the 400 meters.
Pepperdine begins the outdoor season with the usual tri-meet hosted by Westmont and also including UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, February 18.
