FLAGSTAFF, Arizona " The second season of women's indoor track at Pepperdine got underway at Northern Arizona's Friday Night Duals tonight. The Waves lowered their school-record marks in three events while earning four top-seven finishes.
Senior Izzy Connell (Campbell, Calif./The Harker School) picked up right where she left off last year with two of the record times. She placed sixth in the 60 meters in 7.72 seconds, breaking her own record of 7.82 seconds. Then, she placed sixth in the 400 meters in 56.59, outpacing Jordan Spencer's time last year of 59.90.
Freshman Talya Holenstein (Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep) had a nice debut, finishing in seventh place in the 600 meters with a time of 1:39.36.
The other school-record mark was turned in by freshman Emma Engelland (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) in the 60-meter hurdles, as her time of 9.89 was faster than Madison Hays' 10.31 of last year.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Holenstein, senior Gabrielle Ellis (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS), senior Kendall Dunn (Aurora, Colo./Cheney HS/Arapahoe CC) and Connell finished in fifth place in 4:06.78.
The top Waves in other events were freshman Bri Wilson (Murrieta, Calif./Linfield Christian School) in the mile, freshman Katie O'Malley (San Ramon, Calif./Dougherty Valley HS) in the 200 meters and freshman Samantha Maness (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton HS) in the 3,000 meters.
"It was really a fun meet for the team," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "When we were headed over to the venue it started snowing pretty hard, but inside it was nice and warm with some great competition. We had some really outstanding performances, particularly in the sprints. We're starting off right where we left off last year, which is fun."
Pepperdine's other scheduled indoor meet is Washington's UW Invitational on January 27-28.
